Old Gods Die Hard by HisanoXelax

Summary

This story resurrects Egyptian gods into modern life as Set, god of darkness and chaos returns to earth to pose as a mortal.

Throughout the  book Set’s humanity is shown as he tried to find a place for himself in a mortal world. The constant through-line is his search for the current incarnations of the souls who were once his priests and through every life continue to carry the effects of that long ago initiation. They were more of a family to him than the uneasy relationships between his deity family and himself which are also explored. Family members keep showing up, some widely known about such as Osiris and his wife Isis, yet also bring into view some lesser known characters such as his sons; Sobek by Neith, and Upuat by Amtcheret. Some help with his quest while others hinder his search to provide a light-hearted and humorous storyline while approaching serious topics such as an impossible love, overcoming family troubles, the importance of honestly and loyalty, the responsibility that having power brings, and the search for a place to belong.

The main problem Set has to face is the world; it’s just not ready for gods. The age of science and logic leaves little room for belief and magic. It is for this reason only a handful of his followers re-join him leaving him without a loving family at all. People attempt to imprison Set for being ‘dangerous’ and finally try to have him committed as insane. Eventually he realizes that this will not end until humanity finds room for what lies out of sight. He offers to take Melinda with him and make her a goddess but in a heart wrenching scene she declines leaving him to go back to his immortal family where relationships have been patched up enough for them to invite him home.
