However, what Scott did not know, was that Jayne had not been honest with him about her past life. Having met each other three years ago during a weekend in Vegas, when Scott and his pals were celebrating his best buddy Dave’s planned wedding. Scott and Jayne got together when Scott nursing a hangover after the first of two heavy nights, was stepping out of a lift and rescued Jayne from the attention of what he thought at the time were two over zealous guys on another ‘boy’s weekend’ In the days and weeks that followed, Scott and Jayne's romance developed to the point where Jayne left Las Vegas where she worked as a croupier and moved to sleepy upstate New York to be with Scott. Shadows, at first seems like a fast paced thriller with a central character struggling for both his own and his loved ones survival. However, all is not evident from the first few pages. The reader thinking they are gong to be taken on a rollercoaster thriller ride are very quickly taken into a world of the occult. For Shadows is not what it seems and what on first glance, looks like an underworld thriller. The underworld in this case, is deeper and more sinister that anyone could ever imagine.
Jayne had stolen something from the ‘Underworld’ and they wanted it back – and Jayne had to pay with her life. Having arrived in Vegas some two years before meeting Scott, Jayne had earned her croupier skills and moved to the city with one aim in mind, to learn the system and make some easy money. Only having messed with the wrong people and fleeced them for millions, they wanted revenge and would stop at nothing to extract the ultimate payback, Jayne’s death and ownership of her soul. The Vegas underworld was run by the grimmest of reapers and ‘The Man’ had a neat way of leaving the darkest of souls on earth to run his empire of greed and corruption, killing them in the dark, so that their souls remained on earth as shadows.
Now, Scott was the next victim. Having tracked Jayne down, they wanted to ensure that before she died, she shared the information they needed to get back the twenty five million dollars Jayne had fleeced them for some four years earlier and what better way than to convince her than to murder Scott.
As Scott drove his mustang around the Catskill Mountains, he was totally unaware of the shadow lurking in the darkness in the rear of his car. That was until it took him by the throat, holding his hands to the steering wheel, as he cornered hard. As the car hurtled down the mountain side and exploded in a ball of flames in the ravine below.
The shadow having escaped from the car and attached itself to a random scurrying animal as it fled for it’s life out of the path of the falling car, had a simple plan, to get back down the mountain and report a successful kill. Scott, meanwhile who happened to die at an interesting moment in time, at mid day when his shadow for a lingering moment did not know where he was going, (up or down, to heaven or hell), was In a confused state, Scott looking at his distinctive Mustang in flames, quickly realised that something bad had happened, but could not make out why he was not in the car.
